Dance Excellence at Marsden State High School is an audition-based program designed for students who demonstrate both potential in the Dance discipline and commitment to their growth as a dancer. The Year 7 – 10 Dance Excellence classes run during curriculum time and are designed on the Australian Curriculum. This structure provides our Dance Excellence students with core Dance knowledge needed to progress through the subject while extending themselves beyond the expectation of a General Dance class. Year 11 and 12 students who demonstrate a level of excellence in the ATAR-eligible pathway or Applied Dance in Practice syllabus may be recognised as a Dance Excellence student pending their commitment to uphold the expectations of the Dance Excellence program.
Students are exposed to a variety of Dance genres in their curriculum classes, including Hip Hop, Contemporary, Musical Theatre, Social Dance, Popular Dance and World Dance. The learning experiences in Dance Excellence not only teach Dance-specific content, for example, choreography and performance skills, but engage students in the development of essential 21st century skills including communication, collaboration and self-expression.
Dance Excellence students are provided
with opportunities to learn from a range of Dance professionals currently
working and training in the industry. A range of Performance opportunities are available to students but not limited to school-wide events, Marsden Arts Showcase and other events in the
Brisbane and Logan areas.
It is compulsory for students in Dance Excellence to
participate in at least one extra-curricular Dance team to extend themselves
beyond their curriculum classes. These extra-curricular teams include:
- Elite Hip-Hop
- Elite Contemporary
- Elite Jazz
- Emerging Hip-Hop Junior
- Emerging Hip-Hop Senior
- Emerging Technique
- Competitive Cheer
Our partnership with Fizzio for Life supports Dance
Excellence through school visits for one-on-one student consultations and the
sharing of important information regarding injury prevention and management.
Persistence and Pathway Development
Throughout the Dance Excellence program at Marsden students are provided with opportunities to develop and demonstrate our school values of pride, passion and persistence. At graduation, students who have participated in the Dance Excellence program will have gained practical and relevant knowledge of a diverse range of career paths in the Dance industry, including Performer, Choreographer, Teacher, Rehearsal Director, Dance Reviewer, Set/Costume Design, and Stage Manager. The variety of learning experiences provided as part of the Dance Excellence program will also equip students for a Dance Diploma and tertiary Dance degrees, e.g. Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Creative Industries, and Dance Education.
