Excellence Discipline: Rugby League Excellence

The Marsden State High School Rugby League Excellence program is focussed on providing every young man with the opportunity to grow both on and off the field. The Rugby League program has a clear goal around developing young people who can make a positive impact on society. On a Rugby League front, the results from 2017 have placed us into a category that means we now ranked in the top four schools within Australia. This is a result of our grand final appearance in the Queensland Schoolboy competition and reinforced by the fact that we compete in the premier Broncos Cup competition across Years 7-12. The strength of the program across the entire school, provides our students with the opportunity to match the professional training environment, with a high standard of games that they will compete in on a weekly basis. It is important to note that our program incorporates Rugby League into a student’s weekly timetable through a combination of both practical and theory sessions.

Superior Opportunities

As an affiliate school for both the Brisbane Broncos and the Souths Logan Magpies, we are able to offer superior opportunities for our students. These include:

  • Broncos Cup across Years 7-12 (Marsden SHS is one of the super six schools in Queensland)
  • Annual Sydney Tour for the opens squad (Including two games against the Wests Tigers and the Penrith Panthers, as well as a tour of the Sydney Roosters and the Parramatta Eels)
  • Team building excursions for all Rugby League players (Currumbin beach)
  • Experienced and highly credentialed coaching staff
  • Professional recovery techniques (Supplements, Ice baths, rollers/stretch bands, static stretching)
  • Video analysis (Pre and post-game reviews)
  • Strength and conditioning sessions in the gymnasium
  • Additional training outside of curriculum time
  • Access to a physiotherapist during and after a game (Fizzio For Life)
  • Access to the Brisbane Broncos training facility
  • Opportunity to trial for Queensland Schools through the Met East pathway (In 2017 we had 9 Queensland representatives and 27 Met East representatives)
  • MTC (Mates Talk Change) incorporated across our theory programming
  • Supporters buses to our opens fixtures as a means to engage with the community
  • Scholarships for students who have achieved a high level within both club or schoolboy Rugby League
  • Don’t Mess with Marsden (school wide litter initiative led by Rugby League)

Community Partnerships

The Rugby League program is extremely proud of the links that it has with the local community. In an attempt to offer the best experience for kids in the Logan area, it is these relationships that see our students acquire professional equipment, resources, interstate experiences, on-going leadership training and clear links to the NRL and life away from Rugby League. More specifically we hold a strong partnership with:

  • Brisbane Broncos

  • Grand Plaza at Browns Plains

Pride, Passion, Persistence and Pathway Development

Pride: We develop students who have pride in their school through the way they engage in class, the way they wear their uniform and the way they support one another.

Persistence: We develop students who show the persistence to never give up. Through goal setting, mental health training, feedback and support services, we cater for every individual’s needs and circumstances.

Passion: We develop students who are passionate about the school and the local community. We constantly reinforce that these fine young men are enthusiastic, positive and energetic about engaging in the full life of the school.
