EXEMPTIONS FROM SCHOOLING? (Information Sheet)
Parents apply for an exemption from compulsory schooling if, for a period of more than 10 consecutive school days, the child can not attend a school or it would be unreasonable in the circumstances to require the child to attend school. Parents apply for an exemption from compulsory participation if, for a period of more than 10 consecutive school days, the young person can not participate in any eligible option or it would be unreasonable to require the young person to participate in any eligible option.
Students with exemptions from compulsory schooling are not considered to be enrolled during the period of the exemption, and the principal is not responsible for the student's educational program. The student is excused from being enrolled and attending an educational program for the period of the exemption, and the student's parents are excused from their obligation in respect to compulsory schooling and compulsory participation.
Most exemptions from compulsory schooling will have one or more conditions imposed which will vary according to the reasons given in the application for exemption. For example, an exemption might be granted on the condition that the student is accepted into a particular TAFE course and that the school is supplied with a copy of the enrolment acceptance. An exemption may also be granted for a lesser time than that applied for.
An exemption from compulsory schooling is not required for a student to undertake a recognised apprenticeship or traineeship. However, a student of compulsory school age would require an exemption in order to undertake other employment during the time when the student would usually participate in their educational program. A student in the compulsory participation phase requires a partial exemption if seeking to combine part-time work with education and/or training. A student in the compulsory participation phase does not require an exemption to engage in full-time work.
Please Note: It is important that you make an appointment with the school's Principal to fully discuss an exemptions from schooling before decisions are made.
